I don’t understand why they’re using dispersants in the Gulf oil spill. Wouldn’t it be better to contain the spill to a smaller area so that you could collect the oil? The news media have not done a good job at explaining this.

Because they are incompetent. Using dispersants is no solution. They don’t stop the oil spill.

The second largest oil spill in history was in the gulf:

Ixtoc I oil well
Gulf of Mexico
June 3, 1979–March 23, 1980
454,000–480,000 Tons of crude

One ton of crude oil is roughly equal to 308 US gallons, or 7.33 barrels. At 5,000 barrels of oil per day it would take 674 days (or about two years) for this spill to eclipse the Ixtoc I spill. The difference is that this well is closer to prime fishing grounds and tourism spots…

To keep this in perspective. The US alone consumes 20,680,000 barrels of oil a DAY…

Over 1800 people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina and 11 people died from the Gulf Coast Spill. Now don’t get me wrong every life is valuable, but to say that this spill that resulted in 11 lost lives is worse than Katrina which was 1800 lost lives is ridiculous to me.

I accidentally spilled oil in the oven, and now no matter how hard I scrub the oil won’t leave.
